Why App Store Optimization still decides who gets found
Most installs still start with a store search. Here is what that means for indie apps and small teams in 2026.
App Store Optimization is the craft of making your app easier to find and easier to choose inside the App Store and Google Play. It covers keywords in your listing, the creative people see before they tap Install, and the performance signals stores use to decide who deserves more visibility.
That sounds dry until you look at how people actually discover apps. Apple has said that about 65% of App Store downloads begin with a search. On Google Play, search still drives well over half of discovery. Browse tabs, charts, and featuring matter — but search is the pipe most indie apps live or die by.
Why indies care more than big publishers
Large studios can buy attention. Small teams usually cannot outspend them for long. ASO is one of the few growth loops that compounds: a better title or a clearer screenshot can keep earning impressions months after you shipped the change. Paid campaigns stop when the budget stops. A ranking you earned keeps working while you sleep.
Industry benchmarks also show a steep curve at the top of search. Apps in the top three results routinely take a disproportionate share of taps compared with ranks just below them. The jump from page two into the top of page one is where organic installs often start to feel “real.”
What “doing ASO” means day to day
- Pick winnable keywords — terms people actually type, that match what your app does, where you can realistically crack the top results.
- Ship metadata and creative — title, subtitle, keyword field (iOS), short/long description (Play), icon, screenshots, preview video.
- Watch the response — rank movement, search impressions, conversion from product page to install, ratings.
- Repeat — ASO is a weekly loop, not a launch checklist.
Where live store data fits
You cannot optimize what you cannot see. Live rankings, search results, search popularity, and featuring tell you whether last week’s change moved anything — and what competitors are doing today. That is the job Knockplum is built for: put those signals into your scripts, sheets, and agents without forcing another dashboard into your week.
If you want a practical next step, read Keyword research that actually moves installs, then skim the API docs for the endpoints that power that loop.
